Is there a right or wrong way to fill a skip?
So, you want to hire a skip. Maybe the garage needs a good clear out, or the garden shed is collapsing? Maybe it’s time to revamp the garden, or make over that spare room?
Loading a Skip in Scotland
When hiring a skip in Scotland, it’s important to pick the correct size. Make sure to consider the amount and type of materials before picking a skip. Check out our tips on choosing the right skip size, we have a range of sizes from 4 yard skips to 40 yard skips.
While it’s important to choose the correct size of skip, it is also important the contents of the skip are loaded properly. By doing so, it will not only save you precious space, but time and money too.
So, how do you correctly load a skip? Keep reading to discover our handy hints and tips for our Paisley customers!
Location
First to consider is your location. By choosing the best location to place your skip, the easier loading will become.
There’s no sense in placing a skip halfway down your street or on the other side of your town– you’d have to carry the waste materials all the way there! It’s best to find a spot close to the project site. This could be a driveway, private car park, or by the street (if a permit is obtained by the district council eg. Paisley council).
In addition to this, it is also important the skip has easy access. By placing a container next to a high wall or a tree, you are limiting what you can manoeuvre into a skip. Make sure the skip has plenty of space around it to allow room to haul large objects inside.
Organise
Next, organise your waste materials. This will make loading the skip much smoother and quicker.
Organise the waste materials into these categories:
- Flat items
- Brick
- Bulky, awkward items
- Loose debris
Flat Items
Take items such as cardboard, plasterboard, or wood and lay them flat. If there are cardboard boxes, make sure you flatten them too. This will save space!
Use these flattened items to line the bottom and sides of your skip. This foundation will then be squeezed down by the following items.
Bricks
Bricks can then go on top of these flattened items to crush them down. This will in turn create more space.
Bricks can easily fit together and stack nicely which will save space for larger, bulkier items.
Bulky Items
Now things become like Tetris! Try to tightly pack bulky items together to save the most space.
Where possible, break apart items to create more room. For example, if you are throwing away furniture, try to dismantle objects where possible to avoid unnecessarily wasted space.
Loose Debris
Lastly, loose debris can be added. Loose debris goes in last to fill up gaps between the loaded materials. This method is sure to save you the most space!
Don’t Overload
Yet, make sure to not overload a skip. While packing a skip properly and carefully is always encouraged – overfilling a skip can still become an issue.
An overloaded skip can become too heavy for our trucks to lift. This could cost you more money and time!
