Duty & Requirements of Hiring a Skip
Whether you’re a homeowner hiring a skip for domestic use, or hiring a skip for commercial or contractors to use, it’s crucial to be aware of the skip hire Duty of Care obligations. Your Responsibilities as a Skip Hirer
Waste clearance of any kind needs to follow the correct procedures and you have a responsibility to minimise the amount of landfill waste and recycle as much as you can.
No Special Waste may be disposed of in the skip by the hirer. If any special waste is found within the skip once loaded and returned, we will arrange for the safe disposal of Special waste and the hirer will be responsible for all associated expenses.
Simply described, “special waste” is any waste that is hazardous waste, such as asbestos, agricultural waste, and radioactive waste. Our strict policy on special waste is to ensure that our waste management is done without putting human health or the environment in danger. This includes:
- Without risk to water, air, soil, plants or animals;
- Without causing a nuisance through noise or odours; and
- Without adversely affecting the countryside or places of special interest.
You are also responsible for ensuring suitable access to and from the site where the skip is placed. The hirer is responsible for loading the equipment in accordance with the instructions set out in our Terms & Conditions and for checking that the skip’s contents do not exceed the maximum load allowed. The hirer is always responsible for making sure that the equipment and its contents are fit for safe lifting, loading, and transit. The decision of whether the equipment is safe to load will rest solely with the company and its representatives.
Please avoid the following when hiring your skip:
- Setting fire to the contents or skip
- Altering or removing markings on the skip, such as identifying numbers and tags
- Moving the skip without the company’s prior consent
Private or Public Land Skip Placements
You do not need permission to place your skip on private land. Before placing your skip, though, be sure there is enough room for it. Any harm to private property is not our responsibility.
You must be aware of certain skip-hiring laws and requirements if you want to place your skip on a public roadway. If you let us know at the time of booking that your skip will be placed on public land, we will apply for a skip placement permit from your local council.
