It may seem ambitiously optimistic, but Scotland has committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2045. In fact, Scotland was the first government in the world to do this, declaring a climate emergency in 2019. Local governments stepped up and signed their own climate emergency declarations that year as well, and Edinburgh committed to an even more ambitious plan of net-zero emissions by 2030. So, how will Edinburgh help to reach that goal?
Creating A Circular Economy
Recycling is just one part of the move towards sustainability. The goal of Zero Waste Scotland is to create a circular economy, in which “make, use, recycle, and remake” replaces the current system of “make, use once, and dispose”. With an emphasis on valuing everything, realising the potential of our natural resources, and phasing out waste wherever possible, the hope is to usherin a new era of sustainable waste management. This will require everyone’s participation, and businesses will need to be innovative and creative, coming up with new, sustainable solutions and products to further our progress towards ending the current polycrisis. Some other strategies to reduce emissions in Edinburgh include improving lighting, heating, and insulation in houses, cooling and insulation in offices, shops, and restaurants, and shifting to non-motorised transport and wider use of electric vehicles. Other options in practice elsewhere and under consideration in Edinburgh include electrification of heating and cooking, planting trees, reducing meat and dairy consumption, and emphasising green infrastructure while striving to reduce the consumption of concrete and steel.
